File Transfer Protocol or FTP is a protocol used to transfer large files faster and more reliably
from one place to another. It has many advantages over HTTP downloads such as being able to
download anywhere from 2 - 100 files at once (although I only recommend 8 at max). It also has CRC
to ensure file integrity as it is transferred from our server to your computer!
Now let's get down to the basics, FTP has a lot of different clients and are as follows:
- Filezilla - Filezilla is an open-source FTP client that is easily one of the best free
clients available. It has its downfalls such as no ETA for the transfers as folders because it calculates
each file individually. It supports every OS, so download it here.
- CuteFTP - CuteFTP is a Windows and Mac solution for file transfers. It provides CRC and on-the-fly data compression so it takes less time to download files. However it is shareware and the price is rather hefty. This is what
we use mostly so we can provide support for it better than Filezilla and SmartFTP.
- SmartFTP - SmartFTP is another shareware solution that is a little bit cheaper than CuteFTP, especially for the "professional" version. It provides features that aren't found in the freeware FTP clients such as backup and full proxy support.
